"Traditional Practices in Counseling, Psychology, Psychotherapy and Psychiatry  Conference"

The 2nd Annual Conference on Integrating Traditional Practices into Counseling, Psychology, Psychotherapy, and Psychiatry took place on the 22-23 of July 2010 at the Innovation Center, Howard College, University of Kwazulu-Natal in Durban, South Africa.  The conference was co-sponsored by the Forum of African Psychology, The Centre for Diversity in Counselling and Psychotherapy (CDCP)/OISE, The University of Toronto, The University of Kwazulu-Natal, and the Society for the Integration of Traditional Healing into Counselling Psychology, Psychotherapy, and Psychiatry (SithCP3). Selected papers from the conference will be published in one of four journals: Society for the Integration of Traditional Healing into Counselling Psychology, Psychotherapy and Psychiatry, SPECIAL ISSUE on African Traditional Healers and Healing; Counseling Psychology Quarterly; International Journal of Health Promotion and Education; Implications for Health and Mental Health. The attendance was roughly 100-200 people.  The majority attending being academics from South Africa, the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Nigeria, Zimbabwe, Ethiopia, Iran, Turkey, Israel, India and Traditional Healers of South Africa.  Presentation topics ranged from subjects such as "Psycho-Cultural elements in the Indigenous healing practices of mental illness in Karnataka, India" to "Traditional healers and Western trained psychological attitudes towards collaboration and cross-referrals: A dialogue between equals".  One of the highlights was in the form of a Keynote presentation called "Your Health, ROOTED" given by Gogo Pheph'sile Maseko, a traditional healer from Gauteng, South Africa. The conference occurs every two years and the next one in 2012 is expected to take place in India.  Check the websites below for updates.
