A former French colony with a population approaching 10,000,000 souls, Niger (with its capital at Niamey) is the second largest country in West Africa. Western Niger was once part of the Songhai Empire; Central Niger was once part of the Hausa Sultanates; and Eastern Niger was part of the Kanem Bornu Empire. The largest ethnic groups are the Hausa (50%), the Songhai-Zarma (22%), the Tuareg (10%), the Fulani (10%), and the Kanuri (around Lake Chad) each of which have fascinating customs and traditions. BLACFOUNDATION interest here includes all of these groups.
