Her somber pose
was mysterious testimony
to a brilliant intellect.
Even when she smiled
her face was a darkening sky
lit randomly by flashes
of silver lightening.

Dr. Nellie McKay
yet lives in written words
about the literature of Black women.
Words that remain
after her passing.
A worthy tribute
to this Black woman who thought.
